 It is one of the famous ancient mosques in Cairo. Described as the jewel of Islamic architecture in the East, it is the most harmonious monument of Islamic Cairo, and it represents the stage of maturity of Mamluk architecture. It was established by Sultan Al-Nasir Hassan bin Al-Nasir Muhammad bin Qalawun during the period from 757 AH / 1356 AD to 764 AH / 1363 AD during the era of the rule of the maritime Mamluks of Egypt. The building consisted of a mosque and a school for the four schools of thought (Shafi’i, Hanafi, Maliki, and Hanbali), and the sciences of interpretation of the Qur’an, hadith of the Prophet, and the seven readings were also taught in it, in addition to two librarians to memorize orphans of the Qur’an and teach them calligraphy.

 The archaeologists are the most beautiful mosques in Cairo and all of Egypt, the best buildings in the Mamluk era and the pride of Islamic architecture in the whole East. The location of the mosque was known in the past in the Al-Khail Market, and it had a palace that was established by King Al-Nasir Muhammad bin Qalawun in the year 738 AH / 1337 AD for the residence of Prince Yalbugha Al-Yahyawi, and this palace remained until the Sultan began building the mosque and school in the year 757 AH / 1356 AD, and work continued on it throughout his life, and he monitored him Huge budget and spend it generously.

Sultan Hassan was killed, and the school was complete, except for some complementary works, some of which were completed after him by Al-Tawashi Bashir Al-Jamdar, and some of them were left unchanged. He completed the Dome of the Fusqia in 766 AH / 1364 CE, which is a wooden dome built on eight marble pillars and written in its circles the verse of the Holy and the date of its emptying, and he completed the construction of the large dome of wood and covered it with sheets of lead to be thus the fourth large dome in Egypt after the dome of Imam al-Shafi’i and the dome of al-Zahir Mosque And the dome of the Al-Nasir Qalawun Mosque. The school was opened during the life of Sultan Hassan before its completion, and he prayed on Friday and blessed the builders and engineers, and lessons were held in it, and he wrote a waqf for it in 760 AH / 1359 CE, and he appointed staff and reciters and furnished it, chandeliers and beautiful complaints were attached to it, and an imam was appointed for it.

The Sultan Hassan Mosque is one of the most important tourist places that tourists of various cultures flock to. The mosque currently contains a small school for children to study the Holy Quran, and it also holds many cultural seminars and seminars.

 The mosque is open for visits from nine in the morning until five in the evening, and during the month of Ramadan the opening hours of the mosque are extended until the worshipers perform Tarawih prayers.
